County  Air Activities Weekend

13th -15th May 2005, Braid Wood Camp Site

Joining Instructions Kit list

Cubs building model aircraftThe plan is simple; a weekend camp at Braid Wood during which air-biased activities will be available. The intention would be to work towards a suitable air badge, get the background training needed to appreciate gliding or air experience flights, or just try something new.

Although no scouts (or leaders!) will become airborne over the weekend, the programme should act as an introduction to aviation suitable for Scouts intending to sample microlighting, gliding or other air activities later in the year.

Activities planned include:

bulletModel aircraft construction
bulletPop-bottle rocketry
bulletAir navigation exercises (possibly involving an accurate flight simulator)
bulletBuilding and flying kites
bulletRadio Communications badge work
bulletHot air balloons
bulletMeteorology badge work
bulletAircraft recognition badge work
bulletAero engine badge work
bulletWide game with aviation theme (ideas please!)

New for 2005:

bulletGround handling of a glider (yes, someone's bringing one to try)
bulletRound-the-pole model aircraft flying

I have deliberately not specified an age range - an interest in aviation and a desire to learn more about this technical subject are more important. Although Scouts and Explorers are more likely to appreciate some of the aspects, there are activities for cubs too. Model making, kite flying and rocketry activities are can be pitched at a level highly suitable for this age range.

Please put the dates in your diaries and contact me so I can gauge interest. I'd be especially please to hear from you if you're able to help in any way.
