The Troop nights and weekend trips run by the County Team can lead to Scouts gaining the Caver activity badge and Explorer Scouts gaining the Mountain Activities (Alternative D) activity badge.
The requirements for both badges are listed below. These were correct at the time of writing this page - check Scoutbase for the most up-to-date versions (see links below).

Scout Caver Activity Badge

The Scout must complete the following:

  1. Take part in at least four different trips to at least two different cave systems as a member of a properly led group.

  2. Keep a record of these trips, and the routes followed.

  3. Have a good knowledge of the contents of the caving and cave conservation codes, and be able to discuss with the assessor measures that can be taken by participants in the activity to reduce conflict and promote conservation.

Complete the requirements below:

Hold the Scout Caver Badge or with a properly authorised party, have made at least four trips underground to two different cave systems and keep a log.

  1. Explain how caves are formed.

  2. Rig and use ladder pitch under supervision.

  3. As part of a properly authorised party, undertake six additional trips to at least two different cave systems. Three of these trips should include sections involving supervised decent of vertical pitches.

  4. Know the cave conservation code and discuss measures that can be taken to promote conservation of formations and the cave environment.

  5. Study an aspect of speleology agreed beforehand and discusses the findings. Examples are the fauna and flora found in caves, cave photography or bat conservation.

Notes

Explorer Scouts should only undertake caving activities as a member of a properly organised caving group, run by experienced adult cavers authorised by the Scout Association or qualified person(s) by the National Caving Association.

This badge is new (Sept 2006) and replaces the Explorer Scout Mountain Activities badge.
