The syllabus is split into five stages:

  1. Level 1
  2. Level 2
  3. Level 3
  4. Level 4
  5. Level 5

Level 1

At completion of this stage the candidate will be able to:
  • Select a harness and helmet and fit them securely.
  • Tie onto a climbing rope.
  • Climb a selection of simple routes on a top rope.
  • Belay under supervision.

Level 2

At completion of this stage the candidate will be able to:
  • Select various climbs, demonstrating appropriate climbing techniques.
  • Show a good understanding of various belaying devices.
  • Use the common climbing calls.
  • Show a good understanding of ropes.
  • Use these skills under supervision.

Level 3

At completion of this stage the candidate will be able to:
  • Understand the climbing grades.
  • Understand the principles of lead climbing on a climbing wall/artificial surface.
  • Select climbs and top rope with supervision on Natural surfaces.

Level 4

At completion of this stage, the candidate will be able to lead climb on artificial surfaces without supervision. They will have had a basic introduction to climbing on single pitch climbs in the outdoor environment under supervision

Level 5

At completion of this stage, the candidate will have undertaken a programme to improve their climbing ability through an agreed process of evaluation with their climbing instructor.
