Round up of County Climbing Team and Club Activities Year 2002
January
The year started well at the beginning of January, with a trip to North
Wales, staying at White Peris above Llanberis. Saturday was spent
walking along the Nantile Ridge, a really great walk. Sunday was spent
scrambling by some of the group on Mynydd Mawr. Jonesy and the Chief
went off and did their own thing exploring the least frequented parts of
the Snowdon range. The weather was pretty foul.
A few hardcore members of the team made an early trip to the Peak
District, and they managed two reasonable days climbing on Stanage and
Burbage.
Alec, Dan (interesting) Bish and Paul Casey also had another wet weekend
in North Wales and on the Saturday climbed Avalanche Wall, Red wall, and
Longlands continuation (HVD'S) on Lliwedd (Snowdon). It was very wet
and windy climbing. Dan and Alec spent Sunday exploring the quarries
above Blaenau Ffestiniog and Moel Druman (loads of potential there).
February
A trip was due to be made up to the Lake District, but it was decided to
go to North Wales. Only a few people attended but a good weekend was
spent climbing at Tremadog, and the weather was reasonably kind to us. A
few members of the club were introduced to the joys of multi pitching.
Individual members of the team and club also had a few weekends up in
the Peak District.
March
This month started with the scrambling course. There was a poor
attendance on this course, although Alec had fun on the North Ridge of
Tryfan with a group of novices. One member of the group decided half way
up that scrambling was not for them. Still, everybody had fun. Paul
Jones’ group were scrambling on Gribin and the Cneifion Arete. Sunday
was spent in the Glyders, practising navigation and security on steep
ground. The team went to the Peak District over Easter with Chiltern
North District on their ‘Activation’ weekend. Two days were spent
with Scouts climbing, whilst other activities included mountain biking,
hill walking and horse riding.
April
Firstly, we had a club weekend in the Peak District, climbing at Stanage,
Froggatt and Burbage. John Bishop and the Chief ran a successful
instructors workshop, where a range of skills were discussed and used
including teaching techniques. Also several club members had a few day
trips up to the Peak District. The Team also ran a climbing weekend for
Buckingham and Winslow District in the Peak District.
May
May started with a well-attended club weekend in the Peak District
climbing at Froggatt and Burbage. The Team spent a busy weekend at
Longridge Scout Boat Centre for the County Water Weekend running the
climbing wall. Several members of the team also visited North Wales and
spent the weekend at Cwm Silyn and on the Glyders.
June
A club weekend in Pembrokeshire climbing on the great sea cliffs around
St Davids started the month. We had great weather, and some club members
had an interesting visit to Ramsey Island on a rubber-hulled powerboat.
The first young climbers weekend was in the Peak District with the
Scouts enjoying climbing at Stanage and Burbage North. It was a good
introduction to seconding climbs on gritstone. Some Team members also
spent sometime at Symonds Yat, pushing their grades on limestone.
Several Team and club members also attended their SPA training.
July
The lead climbing course in the Peak District was successful and good
fun, and several people made that scary transition from wall climbing to
trad on gritstone. It was a fairly quite month for some reason.
Individual club and Team members climbed in various venues around the
UK.
August
We had a club weekend at Symonds Yat and the Wye Valley, plus a weekend
down in Dartmoor climbing at the Dewerstone and Hound Tor. Jay, Ginger,
Dan (interesting), Rosie, Paul Jones, Alec and few others went to the
Lake District and climbed some classic routes on Dow crag, plus messing
about on Coniston lake in boats, and also walking and scrambling around
the Old Man of Coniston area.
September
Another successful young climbers weekend in the peak district climbing
at Stanage and Birchen edge started the month. All the young climbers
did really well. Their first introduction to lead climbing on
traditional routes seconding loads of classic VDiffs, Severes and a few
VS’s thrown in for good measure. The mountaineering weekend in the
Lakes was poorly attended; only Alec, Oneshoe and Mr Jones went along
and had great fun scrambling on some very wet rock.
October
We had several weekends climbing at the Roaches, once with scouts from
Amersham Common. There was also a club weekend at Tremadog. Dan and Alec
plus Bish had several long weekends climbing in the less visited parts
of the Peak District, plus the more popular areas, and found some great
new crags (well new to us, but we are not telling where they are - we
don't want it getting too popular).
November
Another wet weekend on gritstone. The young climbers competition at the
wall (Green Park) could have been better attended but hopefully more
people will turn up next year. Well done to Chris for wining.
December
A very good Christmas Dinner with the usual antics and silly prizes
being given out. How about someone from the club organising the next
one.
Over the year we had a very busy time at the climbing wall at Green
Park with lots of scout groups having a go, plus a few girl guides. The
young climbers club has proved to be very popular and is going from
strength to strength.
Thanks From The County Adviser
I would just like to thank my team for all their hard work this year
especially at the climbing wall. Some of you have during the summer
months been virtually camped out at green park running group sessions.
Also, thanks for all your efforts on club weekends. I would like to
thank the club members who have helped out this year - you know who you
are.
Hopefully next year will prove to be more successful with more people
getting out there and climbing. If you have any ideas of what you feel
we should be offering you then please get in touch. Please let us know
how you think we can improve communication about what we are up to.
Thanks again to you all,
Alec Carr (Chief)
Bucks Scouts County Climbing Adviser.
Dartmoor: 30th August - 1st September
Venues: The Dewerstone, Hound Tor
Saturday - weather lovely, looks like it will be a good one. Off to the Dewerstone
for a few multi's. Chaz and One-Shoe on 'Central Groove' - excellent HS.
Chaz tries to pull One Shoe off a ledge, and throws a no. 9 hex at him, all in the
space of ten minutes!
Afternoon do bouldering on the tor, and then to the ice-cream van for dessert.
One-Shoe and Chaz enjoy a lovely sleep on the way back at Dobbins Expense.
Chaz
Lead Climbing Course - Peak District: 5th - 7th July 2002
"I sat and watched, amazed at how dad (Alec) was able to make it appear as if he
was having a 'mare. He took us all in and even caused some people to set up a top
rope to rescue him! We were all completely fooled. He's cool! Nobody would have
guessed he planned the whole thing - awesome!!!" Lionel
The trainees clibmed various routes at the Plantation area of Stanage on Saturday, practising gear placement on Top-rope. On Sunday we went to Popular end, so they
could find potential routes for first leads, which they all did - a good weekend
had by all, as Lionel and One-Shoe ticked some classic routes on Sunday.
Pembrokeshire (St Davids): 31st May - 2nd June 2002
Venues: St Davids Head, Porth Calis, Carreg-y-Barlud.
Prepare to 'Dive' - The famous car key saga has taken yet another
twist; swimming in the sea! Alec to evaluate non-keyring arrangements.
Hot sunny weather on Saturday - various climbs on large wall. Makes a
change to have a view of the sea and seals. Nice to be one with the rock.
Simon continued his one day climbing routine.
Paul started a new hobby of fishing in the sea, with a climber as bait,
looking like a garden gnome.
Snowdonia: 3rd-6th May 2002
Venues: Tremadog, Idwal Slabs, Y Grifen Facet, Trfan Fach, Glyder Fach.
Excellent weather on Saturday at Tremadog, and Idwal on Sunday was great
too, with tolerable company (Redding wasn't there!) Scrambling on Monday was
also enjoyable, with people doing a three star grade 3 on Glyder Fach.
