Biggin Hill International Air Fair 2003

Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June

The Display organisers have again requested assistance from members of the Scout Association to help out at the show. We have been asked to undertake our proven role and provide a visible security presence around the hangar complexes and remote parked aircraft during the Show opening hours. Can you help?

This year the display days will be back to their traditional Saturday/Sunday slot. We are asked to provide a total of 40-50 people each day from 09.00-18.00 - people can do one day or both. I am therefore looking for small contingents of Leaders, Ventures/Explorers (16+) and possibly older, bigger Scouts. Further details are provided in the information sheet attached.

As a number of shows have been cancelled this is likely to be one of the main flying events in the calendar during 2003. The aim is that you will have time to enjoy the show and help out in best Scouting traditions.

If you are interested it would be useful to have an early indication of which day or days you hope to attend, and any guestimate of numbers. Please take account of any conflicting events or forthcoming exams when you respond. Because of my need to fill the places, I'll have to work on a first come, first served basis.

Happy to answer questions - I hope to hear from you soon.

Background Information

What time do we need to be there? Briefing each day will be at 8.45am at the Scott-Chard Centre (map will be provided), when we will allocate people into teams. But if you can't make it that early, we may be able to fit you in! Duties then last 1½ hours, followed by 1½ hours off. We finish at 6.00pm.

Can I bring younger Scouts? Every year I am asked whether we can use younger Scouts for the security task and the answer is the same as ever - very sorry, but no. Our job is to provide a visible security presence and experience has shown that younger Scouts are unable to look the part and cannot stand the pace. In my discussions with the organisers they have agreed we can use responsible 16 year olds, and if you have 14 year olds who happen to be 6ft tall then we can probably get away with using them.

If you want to bring younger Scouts with you to see the show then you are welcome to do so, but you will have to purchase your own tickets for them to get in - we are only given a limited number of passes to cover our team. Arrangements should also be made for them to be looked after when they run out of money or get bored - again experience has shown that by mid afternoon they congregate around the Scott-Chard Centre getting under the feet of those who are working. Details of cut price 'walk on' tickets available on request.

What's in it for you? · free entry to the biggest airshow in the South East (adult entry on day £20!); · 50% time off; · a good range of stalls and ground attractions; · a free BBQ (Saturday evening only); · a small donation to your Group funds; and · hopefully, following the Show, souvenir programmes.

What about catering? We provide free tea/coffee/orange throughout the day at the Scott-Chard Centre. There is also a free BBQ on the Saturday evening. Otherwise arrangements are down to you.

Camping For those who wish to camp, full facilities are available at Downe Scout Campsite, only ½mile walk from the Scott-Chard Centre - see www.downeactivitycentre.org.uk. Because in 2002 the grass outside the Scott-Chard Centre has been paved and made into a car park there is room for a handful of hike tents for anyone who can do without facilities.

Has the Scott-Chard Centre been replaced? Not yet. Regulars will know we have been meaning to rebuild for several years but we have now raised 90% of the funds we need so we plan to start work this Summer. So still no toilets or running water on site.

What else is going on? GLS Air Scouts have a fund raising/publicity stall featuring an aviation tombola to raise funds towards the rebuilding of the Scott-Chard Centre, and answer questions about Air Scouts.
